A New Moment with Mama

Mama and the World Wide Web or W W W period

Mama has never shown any interest in wanting a computer or a phone with a data plan. Actually she has boldly stated on many occasions, "those are the devil". This is the same answer she gave me as a child when I asked for an Easy Bake Oven, Play Doh or Kool Aid. More on that Later. Mama has learned the art of texting and did ask for a phone where she could receive pics and videos.

This year we did decide to have internet installed at the farmhouse.  In the years past we have just used our phones when signal permits. If signal dose not permit we drive to the highway or into town.  It was nice sometimes knowing you were going to have a bit of detox from technology on our weekly stays at the farmhouse.

In the interest of keeping Mom a little safer and making decisions based on what is healthier for her we have a lot of items delivered to Mama.  That has introduced Mama to a whole new world, the World Wide Web or as she says, "W W W period or our personal favorite, "Them Googles".

My Mama has always been organized and is a list keeper and maker.  I am used to her writing everything down.  A few months ago I said Mom what do you need done or want me to do this time I am there.  She surprised me by saying, "I want  you to get on them googles and look up some things for me". That week she reminded me several times  we had to set down so I could get on them googles for her.

One evening I called down to her cabin and said I am all yours, come on up.  She walks into the farm kitchen that she cooked in for many years and put a pile of post it notes, ripped out newspaper ads and of course the local Co-op magazine. She had things circled: websites for vitamins, fire ant killers, furniture slip covers, coffe filters, eye drops....and the list goes on. I asked her, Mom what have you been doing? She said, "when I see a commercial or see an ad that I want to know more about I write down that w w w period thing so you can look it up.  You never know, we might need it".

So I have a new Moment with Mama.  I know to schedule an evening in the farm kitchen for her to bring her notes, lists, magazines etc.  I get on them googles and dicuss all the finer points of fire ant killing and perservative free eye drops and anything else Mom wants to look up.
